Guidelines for Field Experience

In accordance with TAC RULE §228.35(b)(1)(2)

Candidates enrolled in an alternative certification program are required to complete a total of 30 hours of classroom observation. The Texas Administrative Code Title 19 Rule 228.35 states that each candidate must complete a minimum of 300 clock-hours of coursework and/or training that include 30 clock-hours of field-based experience to be completed prior to internship. 

Field Experience Requirements:

  • Complete 30 hours of field experience prior to beginning an internship.

Observation

  • Observe certified teachers in the classroom from Pre-k to 12th
  • Participate as an active learner. Provide written reflection of experiences.
  • 15 hours must be completed in an in-classroom setting with a certified teacher
  • Additional appropriate activities that may be deemed as acceptable include:
    • individual or small group tutoring instruction
    • collecting, analyzing, and using student progress data to inform instruction
    • designing of effective lessons plans, and
    • effectively communicating with students, families, colleagues, and community members.

Interaction

  • 15 hours must be completed by interacting with students in a classroom with certified teachers. It is recommended to select grade level(s) and content(s) that you are to pursue on an internship.
    • For example, candidates pursuing ELA-R 4-8 will complete hours observing ELA/R classrooms in grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and/or 8th.
  • You may contact our office to determine the validity of an activity or event.
  • You must submit completed Observation Form(s)/feedback associated with your field experience hours.
  • You must submit completed feedback (observation/interaction notes) per teacher 
  • You must document the date, hours, location, activity
  • Teacher’s signatures are a must if you will be observe/interact in the classroom
  • You must obtain the signature of the campus administrator to certify the completion of your face-to-face observation/interaction hours.
  • ALL forms/reports must be turned in to South Texas Transition to Teaching-ACP prior to beginning an internship (Unless you are considered a late-hire)
  • Incomplete documentation or observation forms will not be accepted.

  Program standards will change to meet any new or updated requirements as set forth by the SBEC and/or TEA.
