Special Education Certification Requirements

As per 19 TAC §231.611(a)

   If you are wanting to obtain your certification as a Special Education teacher, you MUST take and pass the Special Education EC-12 exam.

   If you are teaching a content within the Special Ed department, you must pass the supporting content based on the subject area and grade level you seek employment on. The most common content used to pair with the Special Education is Core Subjects EC-6.

     For example:

Special Education teacher teaching content in Elementary = Pass Special Education EC-12 & Core Subjects EC-6

Special Education teacher teaching content in Middle School – Pass Special Education EC-12 &  any (4-8) content area 

Special Education teacher teaching content in High School – Pass Special Education EC-12 & (7-12) content area

 

-In some departments, you can teach from elementary up to high school with the Special Education EC-12 & the Core Subjects EC-6 exams. It is up to the district to determine the appropriate placement and to:

1.          Determine the IEP goals and objectives that will be common to students enrolled in the course

2.          Determine the TEKS that are aligned with the IEP goals and objectives

3.          Determine the course(s) that include the TEKS that are aligned with the IEP goals and objectives

4.          Determine the certificate(s) that are appropriate for the course(s) that include the TEKS that are aligned with the IEP goals and objectives
